The European Commission, DG III, has published the results of the fifth call for proposals for the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of information technologies (ESPRIT), published on 15 December 1995 (OJ No S 240 of 15.12.1995, p. 43).

In total, 391 proposals were submitted following the call. These were divided between the various areas of the ESPRIT work programme as follows:

- Software technologies (98);
- Technologies for components and subsystems (74);
- Multimedia systems (40);
- Long-term research (41);
- Open microprocessor systems initiative (20);
- High performance computing and networking (55);
- Technologies for business processes (63).

The total funding requested for these projects was ECU 640 million. Of the 391 projects proposed, the Commission has selected 118 projects for funding. The financing to be made available to these projects is ECU 148.88 million.

At the same time, the Commission also evaluated 90 proposals which had been made under the continuous submission scheme. Of these 21 were selected for funding of ECU 6.22 million.
