The Irish State Development Agency, Forbairt, operates an "Applied Research Grants Scheme - Universities" which supports industrial research projects carried out in partnership with universities. The scheme, which is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), has three principal aims:

- To enhance the links between third level colleges and industry;
- To encourage the undertaking of applied research which has direct industrial and commercial application;
- To benefit the Irish industrial base by providing access to the vast expertise in third level colleges.

The scheme is open to researchers in the higher education sector, both universities and regional technical colleges, and the participation of an industry partner of partners is essential. All sectors of industry are covered, including foreign-owned companies based in Ireland, although priority may be given to indigenous SMEs involved in processing and manufacturing. All areas of science and technology are eligible under the scheme.

In most cases the level of grant aid offered is 50%, though this may be increased to 75% in cases where small (less than 20 employees) companies are involved or where a young researcher wishes to establish a new link with an Irish company.
