The European Commission has published the final report of VITAL (Visitors' Information on Transport and Locations), a geographic information services project supported by the IMPACT II programme for the establishment of an internal information services market.

The VITAL project developed an application in which users could search and select locations in a particular city, see the geographic position and the surroundings and retrieve geographic information about the object. From the initial position, the user could then select further locations based on geographic relationships, and determine routes between locations using different modes of transport. Timetables for different modes of public transport were included, to enable choices to be made on the basis of time taken to travel a given route.

VITAL also enables users to determine hotels and other services close to a given location, and can show data on these including scanned pictures. Hotel selections can be made on price or service standard.

The system has been developed in two formats, one for public terminals which can be expected to be heavily used, and one to run on standard PCs in hotels, travel centres or in users' homes and offices.
