The European Commission, DG XIII, has selected 16 projects for the development of practical electronic publishing and on-line information services for business and industry under the IMPACT II programme.

The projects are funded under Action Line 4, "Supporting strategic information initiatives", and are the result of a call for proposals launched on 15 September 1994 (OJ No C 258 of 15.9.1994, p. 6). In total 103 proposals were received by the closing date of 15 December 1994. The 16 projects selected will involve nearly 100 organizations in 16 countries, and the Community contribution to their funding will be ECU 6 million.

The projects, which have the common objective of making existing information more accessible, are as follows:

- ALTO: Advanced links for trade and tourism;
- BISNET: A telematics service providing technical information in the building sector;
- BRIDGE: Broad information dissemination gateways for enterprises;
- CDPLAST: CD-ROMs for SMEs in the plastics transformation industry;
- ENGINE: European energy information exchange;
- ESCS: European sub-contracting system;
- FINE: Freight information network in Europe;
- IMAGE-IN: A commercial image reproduction service;
- INTERBUSINESS: Integrated access to various business information services;
- ISEFI: Information service for the European footwear industry;
- MODE: Music on demand, a European interactive music information and delivery service;
- NAUTIS: Information services for the small boat industry;
- NEWCON: Electronic news service for the construction industry;
- PETRAF: Steps towards a pan-European trading/financial database;
- PROMONET: information dissemination, marketing and communications in the textile industry, using the WWW;
- SINATRA: A database of digital images from film and video archives.
