An Opinion of the Economic and Social Committee (ESC) approves without reservation a Commission proposal submitted on 21 June 1991 for a Council Directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to units of measurement (SEC(91) 1047). . The proposed Directive simply codifies the text of an initial Directive (80/181/EEC) and of two subsequent Directives amending it (85/1/EEC and 89/617/EEC). The Committee notes that, concerning Directive 89/617/EEC, it will be up to the Commission to see that the Member States have taken the necessary steps by the deadline of 30 November 1991 to achieve the objective of harmonization. Annex I of the codified text contains detailed definitions of the units of measurements involved, together with their symbols.
