The European Commission, DG X, has published a call for proposals for projects to be funded under the "Action Plan for the introduction of advanced television services in Europe". The call, which is addressed to broadcasters and audiovisual programme producers, covers two separate but related areas of the Action Plan: - Community support for one or more widescreen broadcasting services; - Community support for programme production and conversion in the 16/9 format. Although the Action Plan covers both "Broadcast services" and "Programme production and conversion", the proposals are being assessed separately under different provisions of the Action Plan. Broadcasters wishing to apply for funding in both areas must make a separate proposal for each area. Community resources available for this fifth call for "Broadcast services" will permit the funding of around 6,000 hours of services to be transmitted over the remaining life of the plan. The Commission service responsible for the management of the "Broadcast services" call for proposals is Directorate-General XIII (Telecommunications, information market and exploitation of research). The Commission service responsible for the management of the "Programme production and conversion" call for proposals is Directorate-General X (Audiovisual media, information, communication and culture).
