The final report of the ENVIDUCATION project, carried out under the IMPACT II programme for the establishment of an internal information services market, has recently been published. ENVIDUCATION is a geographic information system (GIS) project which developed a database and user-friendly access software, on CD-ROM, for environmental education. Information contained in the database, based primarily on satellite observations, covers the state of the environment, natural resources, meteorology, geology and demography at all levels from global to regional. The resulting product, ENVIDUCA, is based on data from several international public domain databases, and contains information on topics such as: - Coastlines, rivers and administrative borders; - Geology (soils, risk of desertification); - Topography, temperature (time series); - Precipitation, evaporation and water balance (time series); - Vegetation (time series); - Agriculture; - Demographics; - Urban cover and settlements. The ENVIDUCA CD-ROM is targeted at primary and secondary schools, as well as at adult education institutes. It is also available to information dissemination centres such as public libraries. A feature of ENVIDUCA is that additional packages, such as local datasets, can be developed easily and incorporated into the main database.
