"Space Explorer" is a GIS (geographic information systems) project funded by the Community's IMPACT programme for the establishment of an information services market. The final report of this project, which aimed to develop a GIS application for travel and holiday data, has recently been published.

The aim of the project was to develop a GIS umbrella for the management, integration, analysis and presentation of data relating to travel and holidays. This would provide users with a means to search for a suitable trip or holiday, within time or budget constraints, based on their interests and preferences. The system was designed to present selected travel options to the user on four levels of output:

- Symbolic (cognitive) map;
- Geographic;
- Travel simulation;
- Detailed travel guide.

The report on the project contains details of the system developed and the methods used. It also contains details of the consortium partners who developed the system.
