Studies in the pharmaceutical sector

The European Commission, DG III, has published an open call for tender for the completion of a study on policy relating to generic medicinal products in the Member States of the European Union and in other OECD countries.

On 20 December 1995, the Council of Ministers called on the Commission, in close cooperation with the Member States, to draw up a report on policy concerning generic medicines in the Member States of the Union and in other OECD countries, in particular the USA, Canada and Japan (OJ No C 350 of 30.12.1995, p. 7).

The work required falls into two main parts:

- (i) An examination of the role of generic products in medical practice in the regions studied, including measures to promote the prescription and supply of generic medicines, and an assessment of the consequences of such measures in terms of level of use;
- (ii) The technical requirements for licensing and marketing authorization, issues relating to intellectual property and R&D. Legislation applicable to international trade, and an evaluation of the effect of the measures on the pharmaceutical sector.

A comprehensive information package on the tendering procedures and the tender specifications is available on request.
