The "European Week for Scientific and Technological Culture 1996" took place from 25 to 29 November. The aim of this annual event is to improve European citizens' knowledge and understanding of science and technology, particularly their European dimension.

Activities supported during the Week aim to bring scientific cooperation between large specialized European organizations, as well as projects supported by the Community's RTD programmes, closer to the public. In addition, the Week tries to make Europeans more acquainted with science and technology as they are perceived, practised and shown in other European countries.

The projects supported, across the European Union, bring together people from the field of informal education (museums, science culture centres, research centres, etc.) with others from education and training institutions (universities, schools, training centres, etc.). Many of the projects supported in 1996 used audiovisual technologies, multimedia tools and electronic information networks to present the latest technologies in a variety of fields to the public.

The European Commission has published a guide to the projects undertaken during the 1996 "European Week for Scientific and Technological Culture" which provides details of the various activities organized. This is available on request from the European Commission.
