The European Commission has awarded funding of ECU 4,866,000 to support urban renewal in Valenciennes, France. The Community aid, awarded under the URBAN Community initiative for the renewal of urban areas (1994-1999), will include ECU 4,478,000 from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and ECU 388,000 from the European Social Fund (ESF).

The EU contribution to the Valenciennes urban renewal programme will go towards the economic revitalization of the Saint-Waast, Dutemple and Chasse Royale districts. The Community aid is supplemented by private and public national financing. In total, approximately 65 million French francs will be invested.

The objective of this URBAN programme is to set up a pilot project aimed at tackling the problem of exclusion and renewing links between the districts concerned and the town centre. A series of measures are planned under three priority themes:

- Assistance to persons in economic or social difficulties (training, professional reinsertion, creation of small businesses, etc.);
- Urban regeneration;
- Social assistance.
