ASSENT is a support action being undertaken under the Telematics Applications specific RTD programme, which aims to conduct a strategic assessment of the Telematics Applications programme in terms of its industrial, socio-economic and technical impacts.

The information gathered by the project will give the programme's management in the Commission a better understanding of the activities undertaken in all the sectors of the Telematics Applications programme. The information will be used to inform adjustments in the programme and as a basis for its continuation beyond 1998.

The ASSENT project has developed a set of instruments to gather information from the full range of stakeholders in the Telematics Applications programme, including participants, users of telematics applications, Commission officials managing both the programme and RTD policies in general, and Member States' officials.

The project will produce both sector reports and evaluation reports in 1997 and 1998. These will allow participants and users to compare results and performances with other projects, and will ensure greater cross-sector contact. The results of ASSENT will also be used to ensure that there are no gaps in the programme's coverage or management.
