The EC's presence at the Third World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), which took place in Orlando, Florida (US), from 14 to 18 October 1996, did not go unnoticed. The presentation of EU activities was ensured through a variety of actions aimed at providing the 2,700 visitors to the Congress (of which over 600 from Europe) with information on Europe's activities in the area of ITS - an important task given the strong competition from North America and Japan in this area.

A range of papers presenting European actions were put forward during the executive and technical sessions of the Congress. These included technical papers on a number of projects supported by the Community's Telematics Applications programme. In addition, two special sessions were organized jointly by DG VII (Transport) and DG XIII (Telecommunications, information market and exploitation of research) of the European Commission. These were well attended despite the competition of numerous parallel sessions.

The EC stand at the Congress was also a great success and was one of the most visited of the 150 stands there. Visitors to the stand were able to view various applications from a number of interesting Community projects. The stand was professionally equipped with:

- A PC allowing access to the various relevant Community WWW sites (C6WebSite, CORDIS, DGVII);
- A PC equipped with various project slide-shows and the new Transport Telematics CD-ROM;
- A video corner where the new video presenting the evaluation results of the main fields of the previous programme (Advanced Transport Telematics) was presented together with some project videos.

The Transport Telematics CD-ROM was distributed to all visitors interested in having an overview of the activities (past, present and future) of the "Transport" sector of the Telematics Applications programme. Moreover, the CD-ROM gives useful information regarding other RTD activities (such as the EU research-industry Task Forces) and policy initiatives such as the High-Level Group on Road Transport.

The following European Community projects were presented by DG XIII:

- INFOPOLIS (Advanced passenger information in European cities): intended to provide guidelines and recommendations for standardization of user interfaces to public transport information for Europe;

- PROMISE (Personal mobile traveller and traffic information service): intended to provide travellers with easy access to a multi-modal travel and traffic information service during their whole journey;

- QUARTET PLUS (Validation of a European urban and regional IRTE based on open system architectures): studying the integration of transport telematics applications in the urban environment in a structured way;

- ICARE (Integration of contactless technologies into public transport environment): will help to make Urban Public Transport attractive while safeguarding individual privacy;

- CHAUFFEUR: will help to develop automatic distance control systems which will increase the density of freight traffic and enable better use to be made of existing roads;

- VASCO (Validation of dedicated short-range communication): intended to validate the dedicated short-range communication proposed for standardization in Europe as a suitable technology to support applications like electronic fee collection and access control.

DG VII exhibited a new CD-ROM focusing on four Euroregional implementation projects (promoting applications like RDS-TMC and traffic information exchange), a PC demonstration on smart freight terminals and a slide-show on trans-European initiatives (including TELTEN2, EDEN and FORCE).

In addition, two new brochures were printed for the occasion:

- "ITS - Telematics in Europe - Meeting the Challenge together";
- "Telematics Applications RTD programme (1994-1998)".
A report on the interim results of the activities of the Community's high-level group on road transport telematics was also available.
