The European Commission, DG XII, has published a booklet detailing the activities and results of the environmental chemistry thematic research network, financed under the Community's Human Capital and Mobility (HCM) programme. The publication is part of a series of cluster booklets on the several thematic research networks funded by the HCM programme, predecessor of the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme.

From 1992 until the end of 1994, 700 HCM research networks were selected out of more than 2,000 proposals. Clustering networks around common research themes has proved a valuable tool in establishing direct contacts between network participants and the Commission's programme management.

Environmental chemistry is one of the major research areas in Europe since many pollution problems are caused by the emission, release, transport, transformation and the biological uptake of chemical substances. The "Environmental Chemistry" booklet reviews the state-of-the-art in this important field and examines the efficiency of networking in the European context.

The HCM Environmental Chemistry research network brought together the resources and inspiration of about 80 partners from all over Europe. Upon termination of its work this network will have financed about 30 man-years of training for young researchers. It has also greatly contributed to the mobility of about 50 individual research fellows.
