The European Commission, DG XII, has published a booklet outlining the research activities conducted by the European research network on free electron lasers. The network was funded by the specific RTD programme in the field of Human Capital and Mobility (HCM), which has now been succeeded by the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme.

Although it is a relatively recent addition to the laser family, the characteristics of the free electron laser make it extremely interesting for users in a wide range of disciplines, from solid-state physics to chemistry and biomedicine. It is also used for a variety of medical purposes such as cutting bones. Its possible applications in treating damaged teeth and irritating tumours are currently being studied.

Europe has become a leading force in this field, owing to the activities of the network partners described in the booklet. Furthermore, the European funding has created great added value, friendly competition and has avoided duplication of work.
