The European Commission has given the go-ahead for a new industrial reconversion programme for the Commune of Aubange in Belgium (Objective 2 region). The programme has been awarded ECU 1.01 million from the Community's Structural Funds, with another ECU 1.16 million to be allocated from national sources. The programme will cover the period 1997-1999 and is expected to create 50 new jobs.

The main objective of the programme is to stimulate relations between SMEs in the region with regard to sub-contracting, research and development, logistics and external services. Particular emphasis will be placed on a practical application of information technologies. Two specific measures are proposed:

- The development of a telematic information system and the creation of products and services adapted to the needs of the area (ECU 1.16 million);
- The setting-up of a telematics support and equipment centre ((ECU 1.01 million).

Final approval of the programme should take place in March 1997.
