The European Telework Development Initiative (ETD) is supported by the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS). The aim of the ETD initiative is to promote and develop teleworking and teletrading by organizations and individuals across Europe.

Europe is falling behind both the USA and Japan in understanding and adopting these new communications methods, according to the director of the ETD initiative, Mr. Horace Mitchell. ETD aims, he says, to act as a catalyst in focusing attention on the benefits of the new methods, by answering people's problems and concerns and fostering wider understanding and use.

Teletrading allows small companies based anywhere in the world to market their products globally using the Internet. However, this sales method can only work successfully if companies understand the characteristics of this new marketplace. ETD seeks to assist in opening up these markets. Likewise telework allows many jobs to be done anywhere in the world, where the skills are available at the right price. This is inevitably a threat to many existing jobs, but the ETD initiative aims to focus attention on the parallel opportunities opened up, and to help individuals and companies take advantage of these.
