The European Commission has selected 62 projects in the agro-industrial sector for funding under the specific RTD programme in the field of agriculture and fisheries (FAIR).

The 62 projects were selected from those submitted under the fourth call for proposals, launched on 15 June 1996 (OJ No C 171/S 114 of 15.6.1996). A total of ECU 59 million will go to the projects selected. The rate of industrial participation is high with a third of project partners being companies, both SMEs and large companies.

Examples of projects to be funded include development of a new diagnostic test for BSE (mad cow disease), and an exploration of the positive effects of wine consumption on heart disease. A large number of the projects (47) have the aim of developing healthier food. Examples include the investigation of allergies, consumption habits and the effects of specific nutrients. On the processing side, projects will look at techniques to improve food safety and quality, in particular for mild heat food processing, while a number of projects will address specific types of food.

Other projects deal with the scale-up and demonstration of industrial renewable products from biological raw materials, such as bioplastics and bulk and fine chemicals.
