The European Commission has approved, in principle, three further programmes under Objective 2 of the Structural Funds for industrial areas of the United Kingdom.

The funding, which amounts to ECU 174.5 million, will go to Plymouth, Thanet and the East Midlands. These three programmes are additional to 11 programmes announced in February 1997, and bring the total of Structural Fund aid to UK regions under Objective 2 to ECU 2.7 billion for the period 1997 to 1999.

The funding is aimed at regenerating declining industrial areas, and will support SME development, innovation technology, tourism and cultural development. In total, the three programmes are expected to create more than 12,500 jobs. The Community funding is to be matched by national and local government money, as well as funding from the private sector, bringing the total amount available for these programmes to ECU 453.7 million.
