The European Commission, DG XII, has published the proceedings of the second European Wave Power Conference, which took place in Lisbon, in November 1995. The conference aimed to increase exchanges of experience and knowledge of the various developments in harnessing wave power and tidal, ocean and sea thermal energy. Interest in the harnessing of power from the sea has been increasing in Europe in recent years. Development of wave energy has been part of the Community research programme on Non-nuclear Energy (JOULE/THERMIE) under the Fourth Framework Programme, after a successful exploratory phase in 1992 and 1993. The main emphasis of Community research at this stage is on the development of megawatt-scale experimental pilot plants, with the aim of demonstrating the technical feasibility schemes.
