The EU and the Mediterranean partner countries have made significant advances in cooperation in the field of space technologies, following a workshop held in Cairo on 26 and 27 May 1997.

The workshop brought together some 200 senior officials and industrialists from 12 Mediterranean countries and the EU, including Mr. Martin Bangemann, European Commissioner responsible for telecommunications. Real examples from the fields of telecommunications, remote sensing and navigation were used to highlight the potential, the costs and the skills needed for the application of space technologies.

Examples of satellite systems developed by European companies, as well as the concept of extending the trans-European transport network to the Mediterranean area were considered particularly useful by participants from the partner countries. Mr. Bangemann stated that the workshop represented a valuable step in the development of the Euro-Med partnership. Furthermore, he hoped that in addition to providing a forum for discussion, the event would lead to the launching of concrete projects.
