The second European Health and Safety at Work Week will take place from 20 to 25 October 1997. The Week is promoted by the European Commission and the Member States with the aim of raising awareness of health and safety. The second Week will focus on one theme "the assessment of risks at work", which will enable activities across Europe to be better coordinated. The objectives will be the same as in 1996: - To make workers and employers aware of hazards in the workplace; - To encourage effective management of health and safety in undertakings; - To promote measures designed to tackle specific problems and reduce the risks; - To promote all relevant Community measures. The 1997 European Health and Safety at Work Week will be based on information, prevention and assessment, and will seek to involve everyone, with the aim of reducing the numbers of occupational accidents and diseases. In 1997, SMEs will be targeted more than ever before.
