A total of 1,066 eligible proposals were submitted in response to the second and final call for support to research training networks under the Community's Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme, published on 17 September 1996 (OJ No S 180 of 17.9.1996, p. 38).

A total of 1,066 eligible proposals were submitted in response to the second and final call for support to research training networks under the Community's Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme, published on 17 September 1996 (OJ No S 180 of 17.9.1996, p. 38).

The 1,066 network proposals submitted by the deadline of 3 February requested total funding of ECU 1,300 million, or an average of ECU 1.25 million per network. Given the programme's budget of ECU 190 million for the call, around 150 networks should receive support.

In comparison with the first call in 1995, the selection rate will be almost double, at 14% (compared to 7% in 1995). This is because the proposals which were judged to be no better than average first time round were discouraged from re-applying. Although there were only three-quarters of the number of proposals, the quality was significantly higher. In addition, since the budget for the second call is 25% higher, and the networks will receive support for three years instead of four, the TMR programme will be able to contribute to an even larger number of top-quality scientific projects than before.

The Commission hopes that the selection of proposals can be completed shortly, with successful applicants informed before the summer holiday. The peer evaluation of proposals by independent panels was completed by the end of May, however the approval of the programme committee and the Commission itself is still needed.
