Commission supports French industrial restructuring

The European Commission has approved a series of programmes under Objective 2 of the Structural Funds to support industrial restructuring in 12 French regions.

In total, ECU 1.498 billion of Community funding will go to the regions in mainland France. In addition, the money will be matched by public and private sector French financing, bringing the total investment in the regions concerned to ECU 4,300 billion. The programmes will focus on improving the employment situation in these regions, with some 80,000 new jobs expected to be created. Measures will be implemented to assist firms and improve their commercial environment, support research, equal opportunities and environmental protection initiatives.

The regions to benefit, with the funding from the Structural Funds, are as follows:

- Alsace: ECU 21.9 million;
- Auvergne: ECU 82.3 million;
- Lower Normandy: ECU 80.3 million;
- Brittany: ECU 118.3 million;
- Centre: ECU 38.0 million;
- Champagne-Ardenne: ECU 113.8 million;
- Nord-Pas-de-Calais: ECU 375.4 million;
- Pays de la Loire: ECU 162.5 million;
- Picardy: ECU 139.6 million;
- Poitou-Charentes: ECU 62.9 million;
- Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur: ECU 154.4 million;
- Rhône-Alpes: ECU 148.9 million.
