The proceedings of a workshop on "Science and modern technology in safeguards", held in Arona, Italy, in October 1996, have recently been published. The workshop was supported by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.

The aim of the workshop was to inform the nuclear safeguards community of selected sciences and advanced technologies that are currently available or will become available in the next few years, and which could be used to support necessary advances in international safeguards. In addition, the workshop was designed to stimulate interchange among experts in the various technologies and in safeguards. The workshop was particularly successful in stimulating debate in areas which are often regarded as lying outside the domain of purely technical nuclear safeguards.

As well as reports from the plenary session, the proceedings contain the papers presented in four parallel working groups, on the following topics:

- Physics and chemistry data generation;
- Computing technology, data collection and organization;
- Mathematics, statistics and decision support;
- Socio-political aspects of safeguards.
