The European Commission, DG XXIV, has published a call for expressions of interest for scientific experts interested in serving as members of the newly constituted Scientific Steering Committee on consumer health and food safety (SSC). There are currently six Scientific Committees, set up by the Commission, dealing with matters related to food, animal nutrition, pesticides, toxicology and ecotoxicity, veterinary aspects and cosmetics. In order to coordinate the work of these committees and to provide advice to the Commission on matters not covered by the other Scientific Committees and on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE), the European Commission has decided to establish a Scientific Steering Committee on consumer health and food safety. The mandate of the SSC is set out in the Commission Decision of 10 June 1997. The Committee will consist of eight experts, not members of any of the other six Scientific Committees, and of the chairpersons of the other Scientific Committees. The members will meet about ten times a year. Significant input will be required from Committee members for preparatory and follow-up work. The present call for expressions of interest is addressed to experts, either from Europe or elsewhere, active in one or several areas relating to consumer health. Preference will be given to candidates with: - More than 15 years of professional experience in the field of consumer health (including animal health and welfare, plant health and environmental health); - Experience in risk assessment; - Experience in providing scientific advice at national or international level; - Work experience in a multidisciplinary and international environment; - Proven scientific excellence; - Experience in science management. A selection panel, chaired by an eminent scientist nominated by the Commission and including representatives of the Commission services dealing with consumer health and scientific research, will select the most suitable candidates from the applications submitted by the specified deadline. From those selected, the Commission will then nominate the eight members of the SSC. All correspondence concerning this call, including requests for further information, should be sent to the following address: European Commission DG XXIV - Consumer Policy and Health Protection DG XXIV/B-1 - Secretariat of the SSC 200 rue de la Loi B-1049 Brussels Tel. +32-2-2958554/2955795; Fax +32-2-2963279 Correspondence should be marked on the outside "SSC/ CALL FOR THE EXPRESSION OF INTEREST/ CONFIDENTIAL".
