New Director-General of the JRC sought

The European Commission wishes to appoint a new Director-General, to be based in Brussels, for the Joint Research Centre (JRC).

The JRC consists of a number of research establishments set up to carry out work within the Community's research programmes and other tasks at the request of the Commission. In particular, these tasks are in fields requiring impartial and independent expertise at European level, and in areas related to the Community's main policies. In addition, the JRC also carries out research in the context of a competitive approach, getting as close as possible to the end-users of its research, and developing collaboration with other research bodies in the Member States.

The Director-General, assisted by the Board of Governors, shall take all measures necessary for the efficient functioning of the JRC. The Director-General will, in particular:

- Prepare draft programmes for the JRC's various fields of activity for submission to the Commission, indicating the financial aspects thereof;
- Establish a strategy for the JRC, particularly with regard to competitive activities, and take the appropriate measures to ensure their execution;
- Negotiate and conclude research contracts with third parties;
- Be responsible for the implementation of programmes and for financial administration;
- Determine the internal organization of the JRC, particularly taking into account the requirements of the budget;
- Within the limits of the powers delegated by the Commission, exercise powers in respect of appointment and employment of staff.

Candidates must be nationals of a European Union Member State. Qualifications should include:

- A solid scientific and technical background;
- Considerable managerial experience in research and technological development;
- Proven ability to foster relations between research and industry.
