The European Design Innovation Tool (EDIT) project is supported by the Community's INNOVATION programme, with the aim of helping SMEs to improve the management of their design processes. The EDIT project involves seven organizations from Spain, France, Portugal, The Netherlands, Germany, Norway and Sweden. In the first phase, the aim is to enhance and refine a methodology to help SMEs improve the management of their design processes. This methodology is based on techniques and best practice, and will be tested in a limited number of companies. During the second stage of the project, throughout 1998, the refined methodology will be widely disseminated through seminars, workshops, the World Wide Web, and the EDIT newsletter. Two major seminars will be organized in Stockholm and Eindhoven. The first issue of EDIT News, the project's newsletter, has recently been published. In addition to a presentation of the project's work programme, it includes two articles on key topics in design and innovation, written by, respectively, a respected professional and academic in the field. These two articles address the topics: "Collective intelligence: how design contributes to success", and "Design and the environmental challenge".
