The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies of the Joint Research Centre has published a special edition of "The IPTS Report" focusing on the "Made in Europe" initiative.

The "Made in Europe" initiative aims to explore Europe's competitive advantages and how these can be maximized to improve Europe's competitiveness and the quality of its citizens' lives. While Europe is a diverse society with a relatively skilled and well-educated work force, it must compete in a rapidly changing world. To ensure that Europe can compete effectively, it must develop a new flexibility to turn this change into competitive advantage.

"Made in Europe" is an ambitious project which, to some extent, is based on the "Made in America" initiative of the 1980s. Its benefits will come not only from projects and studies carried out by the IPTS and its partners, but from active involvement of all concerned parties. "The IPTS Report" special issue contains four articles on topics considered central to the debate, written by members of the "Made in Europe" scientific committee. These address the following topics:

- The new dimensions of competitiveness: toward a European approach;
- The new socio-economics of organization, competitiveness and employment;
- The impact of globalization on European economic integration;
- Made for living? Sustainable welfare and competitiveness.
