The European Commission, DG XII, has published a book of successful projects from the Third Framework Programme entitled "Industrial Technologies - making an impact". The book contains two-page descriptions of 50 selected projects, involving almost 300 organizations, funded by the Industrial and Materials Technologies (BRITE/EURAM), Measurements and Testing (SMT) and Steel Research programmes, under the Third Framework Programme (1990-1994). These projects were conducted by traditional consortia, involving industry, universities and research centres working together, as well as by research centres conducting work for groups of SMEs under the CRAFT cooperative research scheme. Many of the successful projects outlined in the book have already generated publications, allowing wide dissemination of their results, and a number have patented their results. Some ten patents have been taken out on products in the field of medical imaging techniques, and a further nine for the use of liquid polymers for optical components. The 50 projects selected relate to the following research areas: - Environment; - Medicine and health; - Agriculture and food; - Industrial processes; - New products and materials; - Transport.
