The third call for proposals under the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Biomedicine and Health (BIOMED 2) was launched in September 1996 (OJ No S 180 of 17.9.1996, p. 30). The call attracted a great deal of interest, with a total of 1,002 proposals received by the deadline of 17 December 1996.

Following completion of the evaluation procedure, 159 projects have now been selected for funding under the BIOMED programme. The projects, which will receive funding of a total of over ECU 72 million, are divided as follows among the various areas covered by the call:

- Area 4.1. Cancer research: 27 projects, ECU 15,375,000;
- Area 4.3. Research on cardiovascular diseases: 23 projects, ECU 11,570,700;
- Area 4.4. Research on chronic diseases, ageing and age-related diseases: 29 projects, ECU 15,290,000;
- Area 4.5. Research on occupational and environmental health: 9 projects, ECU 3,110,000;
- Area 4.6. Rare diseases: 10 projects, ECU 3,718,000;
- Area 6. Public health research, including health services research: 41 projects, ECU 14,589,000;
- Area 7. Research on biomedical ethics: 10 projects, ECU 2,754,000;
- Area 8.1. Ethical, legal and social aspects: 6 projects, ECU 1,473,000;
- Area 8.2. Shared-cost demonstration projects: 4 projects, ECU 4,500,000.

The majority of participants in the projects selected are from the education (49%) and research (30%) sectors.
