The European Commission, DG XII, has published the proceedings of the seventh European symposium on physico-chemical behaviour of atmospheric pollutants which took place in Venice, Italy, on 2-4 October 1996. The theme of the symposium was "The oxidizing capacity of the troposphere".

The large number and high quality of the contributions to the symposium highlighted the important role of the European research in atmospheric chemistry. The three-day symposium, opened by P.J. Crutzen, Nobel Prize Winner in chemistry, presented highlights of research currently underway in this field. Priority was given to studies performed in three main areas:

- Free radicals;
- Tropospheric ozone formation processes;
- Aerosols, clouds and multiphase chemistry.

The symposium was organized by the European Commission (DG XII/D - Environment and Climate programme) and the Environment Institute of the Joint Research Centre, within the framework of the concerted action "Atmospheric Chemistry".
