The European Commission has nominated eight independent scientific experts to serve on the recently established Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) on consumer health and food safety. These eight experts were selected following the publication of a call for expressions of interest in June 1997 (OJ No C 187 of 19.6.1997). They will be joined by the chairmen of the eight sectoral scientific committees, due to be nominated at the beginning of October.

The eight Members of the SSC already selected are as follows:

- Prof. Robert Kroes, Director of the Research Institute for Toxicology (RITOX), Utrecht University (NL);

- Prof. Werner Klein, Director, Fraunhofer-Institut für Umweltchemie und Ökotoxikologie, Schmallenger (D);

- Prof. Gérard Pascal, Director of the "Centre National d'Etudes et de Recommendations sur la Nutrition et l'Alimentation" (F);

- Prof. Marcel Vanbelle, Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) (B);

- Prof. W. Philip T. James, Director, Rowett Research Institute, Aberdeen (UK);

- Prof. Vittorio Silano, Director General of the Pharmaceutical Service, Ministry of Health, Roma (I);

- Prof. Michael J. Gibney, Director, Unit of Nutrition and Dietetics, Department of Clinical Medicine, Trinity College, Dublin (IR);

- Prof. Dr. Per Jonas Wierup, Director of the Swedish Animal Health Service, Stockholm, (S).

These experts were selected, from 162 candidates, by a jury established by the European Commission and chaired by Prof. Yozef Schell, leading Belgian scientist and Director of the Max-Planck Institute for Breeding Research (Germany). They were chosen on the basis of their excellent scientific reputation and the need to ensure a balanced coverage of the various scientific disciplines.
