The European Commission has approved the award of ECU 18 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the first stage of a complete sewerage project for Santander Bay, Spain.

The Community funding represents 70% of the costs of the first stage, which involves installing a sewerage system to collect industrial and municipal waste water from the town of Santander and two neighbouring municipalities. The project has been planned for some 11 years, and will benefit a region of around 270,000 inhabitants.
