The Commission is to award approximately ECU 16 million in aid under the INTERREG Community Initiative to support cross-border cooperation and the interconnection of energy networks between Italy and Slovenia.

This assistance is being given to an Italy-Slovenia programme aimed at safeguarding the natural resources shared by the two countries, as well as encouraging exchanges of knowledge, the efficient use of water and energy resources and the development of the small business sector. The total cost of the programme, including national and private-sector funding, will be approximately ECU 31 million.

The eligible areas in Italy border on Slovenia and are located in the regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto.

The programme is based around three major priorities:

- Ensuring the proper development and protection of natural resources and the environment via the creation of natural parks, theme tourism and the promotion of local products;

- Breaking down the existing barriers between communities living on either side of the border by encouraging the exchange of know-how, creating common practices in local development planning and mounting schemes that take advantage of the similarities between the areas concerned;

- Supporting the small business sector through the encouragement of cooperation between firms, the provision of investment aid and support to innovative schemes in the service sector.
