The latest issue of the UK EUREKA Bulletin presents a round-up of the activities undertaken by the UK during its year in the Chair of the EUREKA initiative (July 1996 to June 1997).

Key achievements included work on streamlining EUREKA, to make it more focused and improve the service to participants. The UK chair has successfully reformed the organization, ensuring that EUREKA's successful bottom-up approach is not thwarted by its growth. The UK chair also started the implementation of the four-year medium term plan, adopted in June 1996.

Under the UK chair, EUREKA also examined the links between the initiative and the European Community's Framework Programme, in view of the preparation of the Fifth Framework Programme. Following this work, a paper outlining practical steps to enhance the synergies was adopted, and this has been well received by the European Commission.

Finally, the UK chair took steps to open up activities under the EUREKA initiative to participation from non-member countries. This is in line with the wishes of many representatives from industry, who wish to collaborate with the best partners, whether they are European or not. These moves will be continued by the Portuguese chair, which runs from July 1997 to June 1998.
