The Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Standards, Measurement and Testing (SMT) is supporting a project in the field of quality assurance for chemical analysis aimed at promoting a more harmonized approach to training in this field.

Although a range of training courses exist on quality assurance and quality control for chemical analysis, no harmonized approach to such courses as yet exists at the European level. In addition, the transfer of knowledge to small and medium-sized control laboratories, particularly in Southern Europe, is severely hampered by the language barrier as most training material is still only available in English.

The objective of this SMT project is to organize a series of training courses on quality assurance in the analytical laboratory, based on a common course book and overheads. Courses will be organized in five EU Member States (Greece, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal) in summer 1998. The course material, prepared on the basis of an existing English publication, will be translated into the five EU languages concerned.
