The European Commission, DG XII, has published a "History of European scientific and technological cooperation", prepared from the proceedings of a conference held in Florence, Italy, in November 1995.

The conference was organized by the European Commission, within the framework of the European Science and Technology Forum, and brought together representatives of some 15 European organizations, programmes or enterprises dedicated to various forms of scientific research or technological development. The discussions on each followed a similar pattern, with an academic, historical paper followed by comments from actors with significant involvement in the organization or programme. Each session concluded with a presentation from a senior official, describing the present situation, with discussion then opened to the floor.
