EU/Russia cooperation on safety aspects of the design of evolutionary pressurized water reactors

The European Commission, DG XI, has published a call for proposals aimed at promoting European Union and Russian Federation cooperation on safety aspects of the design of evolutionary pressurized water reactors (PWRs).

The aim of this call is to increase the concerted effort between the technical safety organizations and nuclear industry in the European Union, and their counterparts in the Russian Federation, on safety aspects of the design of evolutionary PWRs. In this context PWR shall be taken to include both West European designs and Russian VVER designs. This concerted effort shall identify similarities and differences in safety criteria and requirements and shall develop approaches for improving harmonization where differences are identified.

Priority will be given to initiatives based on an effective cooperation between Member States' technical safety organizations and nuclear industry and their Russian counterparts aimed at establishing a clear set of technical and administrative recommendations to harmonize the safety criteria and requirements for evolutionary PWRs in the European Union and the Russian Federation.

The European Union has identified the following areas of interest:

- Safety requirements for evolutionary PWR designs;
- Severe accidents;
- Containment issues;
- Hydrogen issues;
- Analytical investigations.

A number of key safety issues within each of these technical areas are specified in the original tender documents.
