The European Commission has recently approved two new projects under the Structural Funds, in Portugal and France.

The Portuguese programme, funded under the INTERREG II C Community Initiative, aims to combat drought. With a total Community contribution of ECU 6.2 million, it will improve the control of water resources and make better use of water in agriculture. Examples of measures to be supported include studies on the effects of drought, pilot irrigation projects and promotion of cooperation, both between authorities in Portugal and with authorities from outside Portugal.

The French programme of technical assistance, under Objective 2 of the Structural Funds, is aimed at reversing decline in industrial areas. The Community contribution of ECU 1 million, together with national public and private funding, will be used for three types of measures: training for programme managers; promotion of the exchange of good practices; and the adoption of a national monitoring system.
