A small high-level "think tank" has been set up by the European Commission to reflect on future audiovisual policy guidelines for the European Union (EU). The think tank will look in particular at the impact of digital technology on the European content production industry, the industrial, cultural and societal challenges facing the industry and how these can best be met by public authorities, and the importance of safeguarding public interest (in particular with regard to ethical considerations) in the new audiovisual landscape.

The first meeting of the think tank, presided by Mr. Marcelino Oreja, Commissioner responsible for audiovisual policy and culture, was held on 3 November 1997. Four further meetings of the group are planned between now and September 1998, at which time the group will submit a report including its analyses and recommendations to the European Commission. The report will also be made available to the European Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the Member States.

- José M. Bergareche (Spain):
Former Chairman of the International Press Institute

- Hervé Bourges (France):
President of the "Conseil Supérieur de l'Audiovisuel", former Chairman and Managing Director of France Télévision and TF 1;

- Liliana Caviani (Italy):
Film Director, Member of the Administrative Board of RAI (Radiotelevisione Italiana);

- Michael Kuhn (UK):
President of Polygram Filmed Entertainment;

- John McGrath (UK):
Film Director, Managing Director of Freeway Films, Member of the British Screen Advisory Board;

- Jan Mojto (Austria):
Chairman of the Association of Commercial Televisions, Chairman and Managing Director of Taurus Films and former Chairman and Managing Director of Telepiù

- Albert Scharf (Germany):
President of the European Broadcasting Union and Director of Bayerischer Rundfunk;

- Boleslaw Sulik (Poland):
Film critic, scriptwriter, television producer and current Chairman of the National Broadcasting Council of Poland;
