The Regional Information Society Initiative (RISI) is a pilot scheme supported by the European Commission which aims to integrate the concept of the Information Society into regional development policies.

A total of 28 less-favoured regions are participating in the initiative, including the six regions which participated in an exploratory action. The main objectives for regions which establish a RISI are:

- To develop consensus and partnership amongst key regional players around a "Regional Information Society strategy", describing how to face the challenges, and to profit from the opportunities, offered by the Information Society in a regional context;
- To promote their commitment and cooperation in view of the development of a "Regional action plan", including an assessment of the feasibility of key applications, characterized by a strong contribution to economic development.

RISI is one of the pilot schemes supported under Article 10 of the European Regional Development Fund, which supports innovative actions for regional development and employment creation.
