The Financial Issues Working Group (FIWG) has been set up by the European Commission, DG III, to support the electronic pilot actions and the G7 pilot project "Global market place for SMEs". The Group's purpose is to stimulate the development and deployment of innovative payment systems and transaction mechanisms within the EU.

The FIWG aims to provide a structured forum for open and constructive discussions of key technological, economic and institutional issues relating to the financial aspects of electronic commerce. In addition, it promotes, launches and monitors the implementation of testbeds and pilot projects in the field of payment systems.

A new Web site has been launched on the Commission's ISPO server to promote the work of the Group. It will act as a focal point for companies and individuals interested in electronic finance, innovative payment systems and transaction mechanisms. In addition to information on the work of the FIWG and its sub-groups, the Web site gives access to a wide range of resources in the field.
