The European Commission, DG XII, has published the proceedings of a European seminar on the "Current state and prospects of nuclear energy research in Western Europe". The seminar, held in Chatou, France, on 3 October 1996, was organized at the joint initiative of the European Commission and Electricité de France.

The seminar brought together some 80 European nuclear experts and decision makers to discuss their findings on the current state of nuclear energy research in Western Europe, with the aim of establishing recommendations for future common nuclear research in the short, medium and long term.

The exchange of views conducted touched on many points currently of major concern to nuclear energy research (e.g. reactor core and fuel, operation and safety of reactors, back-end of the fuel cycle and operational lifetime of nuclear power plants) and provided an important input to the preparation of the next Euratom Framework Programme which will run from 1998 to 2002.
