The Rioja region of Spain is to receive Community assistance of ECU 17.6 million under Objective 2 of the Structural Funds (conversion of industrial areas in decline) for the period up to 1999.

Just under half of this assistance is for schemes directly intended to promote employment, competitiveness and an internationalization of economic activities in the region. Support for research and innovation and for environmental protection is also included among the priorities in this operational programme.

With regard to research and innovation, approximately ECU 4.5 million will be used to implement regional government projects in the fields of research and new technologies and improving scientific infrastructure at three research institutes (chemicals and the environment, technology, agri-foodstuffs). In addition, ECU 200,000 will be allocated to funding bursaries for training and specialization in several fields of technology and research (wine, agri-business, etc.).
