A total of 96 projects have been selected for funding following the third call for proposals under the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Biotechnology (BIOTECH II). These projects will receive total funding of ECU 113.6 million. Launched on 15 June 1996 (OJ No S 114 of 15.6.1997) the third call attracted a total of 390 proposals by the closing date of 18 October 1996. The number of projects selected represents a selection rate of 24.6%, an increase in comparison to the two previous calls. Industrial participation continued to rise, reaching 19%, while the proportion of projects involving at lest one company (industrial penetration) reached 77%. Some 41% of projects include an SME. The projects selected are divided as follows among the various areas covered by the call: - Area 1: Cell factories - 1 project; - Area 2: Genome analysis - 5 projects; - Area 3.1: Plant molecular and cellular biology - 24 projects (including two fused together); - Area 3.2.1: Animal mapping and selection - 1 project; - Area 3.2.3: Somatic gene therapy - 5 projects; - Area 5.1: Immunological substances - 13 projects; - Area 5.2: Transdisease vaccinology - 2 projects; - Area 6: Structural biology - 16 projects; - Area 7.1: In vitro pharmaco-toxicology - 6 projects; - Area 7.3: Environmental biotechnology - 7 projects; - Area 7.4: Biodiversity - 2 projects; - Area 8: Infrastructures: 3 projects; - Horizontal activities - 10 projects. The fourth and final call for the BIOTECH programme closed on 15 October 1997. The first results from this call are expected in the new year.
