A book providing general information on the different crops currently available throughout Europe which could be cultivated as sources of renewable raw material for industrial purposes has been published by DG XII of the European Commission.

In light of the growing interest in renewable resources, this book, produced within the framework of the FAIR programme for RTD in the field of agriculture and fisheries, illustrates and catalogues many of the wide range of crops potentially available for industrial exploitation in Europe. It is intended to provide a useful information resource for a wide range of interested groups such as students, scientists, farmers, industrialists and policy makers.

The book covers a wide range of crop species, many of which have been the subject of large-scale research projects funded by the FAIR programme, of potential use in the following industrial sectors:

- Agrochemicals: Caraway, Quinoa, Euphorbia Iagascae, Okra, Pyrethrum, Annual Wormwood;

- Board, composites, building and insulation materials: Sunflower, Hemp, Flax, Cotton, Kenaf, Miscanthus, Common Reed;

- Cordage and sacking: Hemp, Kenaf, Nettle;

- Cosmetics and toiletries: Amaranth, Caraway, Coriander, Pot Marigold, Bugloss, Crambe, Gold of Pleasure, Quinoa, Caper Spurge, Meadowfoam, Linseed, Mallows, Evening Primrose, Jojoba, Columbine;

- Dyes: Woad, Madder, Weld, Golden Rod, Castor, Safflower;

- Energy and fuels: Sunflower, Jerusalem Artichokes, Oilseed Rape, Gold of Pleasure, Caper Spurge, Sorghum, Miscanthus, Reed Canary-Grass, Reeds, Cordgrasses, arable energy coppice, Ethiopian Mustard, Cardoon;
