The European Union will provide ECU 137 million to help with new flood prevention measures along the Rhine and Meuse rivers in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, The Netherlands and Switzerland. The funding comes from the INTERREG II Community Initiative, which supports trans-frontier cooperation. A total of ECU 427 million will be spent on the programme, which aims to prevent damage caused by floods to the catchment area of the rivers, and to create a balance between the different activities concerning sustainable management of water in the area. Measures to be supported under the programme include: - Measures in the catchment area, such as restoration and creation of overflow areas, reactivation of meanders and old river branches, and improving soil porosity; - Measures in principal riverbeds, aimed at undoing some of the changes made over the last century, such as lowering and expanding embankments, and deepening the riverbed; - Improving knowledge and cooperation, by developing spatial planning models, promoting and implementing best practice, identifying sensitive areas and raising awareness.
