The European Commission is to provide financial assistance of some ECU 194 million to support industrial conversion the Madrid region of Spain. The aid approved by the Commission is to be awarded under Objective 2 of the EU's Structural Funds (conversion of regions seriously affected by industrial decline) for the period running to the end of 1999. The Structural Funds programme approved by the Commission consists of measures directly intended to stimulate employment, competitiveness and globalization in an area affected by decline. It also includes substantial support for research technology and innovation. Other priorities includes local and urban development, environmental protection and the development of roads required for business activities. With regard to R&D support, an overall allocation of ECU 40 million will go towards the construction and equipping of research and technology centres at Madrid's five universities: Autonome de Madrid, Complutense, Carlos III, Juan Carlos I and Madrid Polytechnic. In the field of environmental protection, the priority will be the development of sewerage and waste-water treatment facilities and collectors in areas with high industrial concentration. Attention will also be given to the regeneration of run-down industrial areas and to the treatment of soil polluted by industries in the past.
