In 1995 the European Commission launched an EC demonstration programme on the Integrated Management of Coastal Zones (ICZM), aimed at supporting the implementation of sustainable development in coastal areas. Following completion of the initial phase of this programme, the Commission has published an interim progress report presenting its preliminary observations and the working programme for the next two years.

The Integrated Management of Coastal Zones programme is run jointly by three Directorates-General (XI, XIV, XVI) with the scientific support of DG XII, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the European Environment Agency. To date, 35 active demonstration projects have been launched, and six thematic analyses on topics believed to be central to the successful management of coastal zones are underway.

The conclusions from these activities will be brought together over the coming year to form the basis for a wide-ranging debate on the actions required in this area at local, regional, national and Community levels. The recommendations resulting from this debate are expected to be presented by the Commission by the end of 1999.
